IACC breaks record for 2008, kills over 1,000 animals in June
Indianapolis Animal Care & Control has released their kennel statistics for June. Normally, I take the time to compile them and summmarize on the ACCess page, but some quick math impressed me so much that I had to present the raw data now (click here to download the PDF file).
Out of the 1,799 animals that came into IACC in June, 1,098 were killed. Numerically speaking, that's 61% of the animals, or almost 2 out of every 3 animals. But I was also struck by the sheer number killed. That means that on average, 36.6 animals were killed every day in June. Can any of us really even imagine what it would be like to see 36 dead dogs and cats every day?
How can the killing be stopped? By applying the tested and proven No Kill Equation. In Reno, NV, the No Kill Equation lowered their kill rate 50% in the first year. Imagine, killing 500 fewer cats and dogs, just in a single month. Is it magic or smoke and mirrors? No, but it requires an animal control administrator that is committed and working hard to create programs to save the lives of animals and use killing only as an absolute last resort.
